Getting Rid of Headaches

Getting Rid of HeadachesWhen you have a headache, you probably don’t want to do anything except try to sleep it off. There are times when you can take a nap and your headache will go away. However, if your headache is severe, there are some things that you can try at home that will help.

Medication
One of the things that you can try is taking an over the counter medication. Follow the directions on the bottle because some medications can irritate the lining of the stomach or the liver. Many pain medications won’t start working for about 30 minutes, so take something as soon as you feel a headache beginning. Don’t wait until it is full blown to take something for pain because you will probably be tempted to take more than the recommended dosage.

Water
If you are dehydrated, then you could be more prone to headaches. Make sure you drink plenty of water during the day so that the cells in the body stay hydrated. Avoid drinking a lot of soda or other drinks with caffeine as this can lead to a stronger headache. If you have been drinking sodas or beverages that are high in caffeine and you decide to stop drinking them, then this can lead to headaches as well. It is withdrawal symptoms from not having the caffeine in the body.

Dark Places
Some headaches are triggered by bright lights, and if you have a headache, bright lights might make it worse. Find a room in the home where you can close the blinds and turn off all of the lights. Turn on the ceiling fan so that there is a gentle breeze, and try to close your eyes so that you can relax. You can wear an eye mask to make it darker. Try to control your breathing so that you are relaxed. Adjust your head and neck so there is not any tension which can create another headache.

Doctors
If none of the techniques at home work, then you might want to consider contacting a doctor such as a neurologist North Bergen offers. The doctor will look at your medical history to try to determine if there might be any underlying conditions that could be causing your headaches. The doctor can also conduct tests to see if there is anything physically wrong in the head that would be causing the headaches. Prescription medications can be given that are stronger than what you would get over the counter.
