Proper Flossing TechniquesYour dentist knows you know. Everyone knows you know. More importantly you know that you know. You should have flossed last night before bed. Dentists at agree that you should floss every single day.

It’s okay. Many people didn’t either. We as an American Society can learn to do better in the flossing department. People don’t do it because it takes time and energy. It’s one more thing to do during the day or before bed. We are all living hurried lives and we don’t want to stop to take care of our teeth for just that few seconds it takes to floss.

The ADA recommends that you floss at least once a day.

First make sure that you have the appropriate kinds of floss. There are two types which are recommended.

Nylon floss


PTFE floss

Nylon floss has many threads to it and it can come apart between teeth that are tightly spaced. This isn’t a huge problem, but sometimes you can find waxed nylon floss which helps with that problem.

PTFE floss is a single thread and is much less likely to come apart between teeth.

Both of these types of floss are fine to use and both will get you results.

When you first start to floss take out about a foot and a half of thread from the box. Wrap it around your finger in such a way that leaves a couple of inches to work with in your teeth. Slide the floss up and down between your teeth paying particular attention to spaces which are tightly spaced.

Lift the floss all the way between the teeth so that you get under the gum line. Floss between all of your teeth. Use a clean section of the floss for each tooth.

Studies have shown that flossing can actually be beneficial for your health in more ways than one. Removing plaque between your teeth actually has an effect on the plaque in your arteries. Scientists aren’t sure what exactly is taking place in these situations, but when you’re talking about your health you can’t be too careful.

So from now on, along with brushing three times a day after meals, and rinsing with mouth wash, remember that you should also make certain to floss. Flossing will help you to keep cavity causing bacteria at a minimum between teeth, were most cavities form. It can, although we’re not certain how, affect heart health and removing the plaque in your mouth can assist in reducing plaque in your arteries.
